Complete Defense and Security: From Awareness to Fortification

Security enables all other activities. Without defense, everything built can be taken. This campaign covers threat assessment, perimeter security, fortification, weapons, and community defense.

Chapter 1: Threat Assessment

Threat LevelIndicatorsResponseTimeframeResources Needed
Green (peaceful)Stable community, no threatsMaintain awareness, build reservesOngoingMinimal (observation)
Yellow (elevated)Rumors of unrest, strangersIncrease patrols, secure perimeterDays-weeksModerate (manpower)
Orange (high)Confirmed hostile intent, theftFull security posture, arm defendersHours-daysSignificant (weapons, barriers)
Red (imminent)Attack underway or imminentAll hands defense, protect vulnerableMinutes-hoursMaximum (all resources)

Chapter 2: Perimeter Security

Outer (observation)500+ yardsEarly warningObservation posts, dogs, trip wiresLowPatrols
Middle (deterrence)100-500 yardsSlow approach, channel movementFencing, thorny hedges, cleared fieldsModerateSeasonal
Inner (barrier)10-100 yardsStop/delay penetrationWalls, ditches, gates, locksHighRegular inspection
Core (safe room)Building interiorLast refugeReinforced room, supplies, communicationModerateMinimal

Natural barriers: Thorny hedges (osage orange, hawthorn, blackberry) = living fence that grows stronger yearly. Plant dense, 3 rows. Mature in 3-5 years. Impenetrable to humans and livestock. Free. Self-repairing. Provides fruit/habitat. Historical "hedgerow" defense of England and France.

Reference Card

  1. Layers: outer (observe) → middle (deter) → inner (stop) → core (survive). Never rely on single layer.
  2. Thorny hedge: plant osage orange or hawthorn dense, 3 rows. Free, self-repairing, impenetrable in 3-5 years.
  3. Earthen berm: 3 ft of packed earth stops rifle bullets. Free material. Build with shovels. Most effective quick fortification.
  4. Dogs: best early warning system. Hear/smell threats long before humans. Low cost. High reliability. Train for alert (not attack).
  5. Spear: easiest effective weapon to make. Sharpened hardwood or metal point on 6-8 ft shaft. Minimal training for basic use.
  6. Shifts: never leave perimeter unobserved. 4-hour watches. 2 people minimum per watch. Fatigue = vulnerability.
  7. Communication: establish signals (horn blasts, flag signals, radio codes). Everyone must know: 1 blast = attention, 3 = emergency.
  8. Train together: monthly drills. Everyone knows their position, role, and evacuation route. Practice = survival.
