Sovereignty Module: Harvest the Waters

Harvest the Waters
Complete Fishing, Aquaculture, and Fish Processing Guide
Complete Fishing, Aquaculture, and Fish Processing Guide
Fish provide high-quality protein, essential fatty acids, and vitamins that are difficult to obtain from plants alone. This campaign covers fishing methods, fish farming, and preservation techniques.
Chapter 1: Fishing Methods
| Method | Equipment | Target | Yield |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hook and line (rod/handline) | Hook, line, bait, rod (optional) | Individual fish | Low-moderate |
| Trotline (multiple hooks on one line) | Main line, hooks, weights, bait | Multiple fish overnight | Moderate |
| Gill net | Monofilament or fiber net | Schools of fish (by size) | High |
| Cast net | Circular weighted net | Baitfish, schooling fish | Moderate |
| Seine net | Long net with weights and floats | Schools in shallow water | High |
| Fish trap (funnel/basket) | Woven basket or wire | Continuous passive catch | Moderate |
| Weir (fish fence) | Stakes and woven panels in stream | Migrating fish | High |
| Spear/gig | Sharpened pole or multi-prong gig | Individual fish (clear water) | Low |
| Bow fishing | Bow, reel, barbed arrow | Individual fish (shallow water) | Low |
| Jug fishing | Sealed jug, line, hook, bait | Catfish, bottom feeders | Moderate |
Chapter 2: Hook and Line Fishing
| Component | Options | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hooks | Manufactured (salvage) or hand-forged from wire/bone/thorn | Size matches target fish |
| Line | Monofilament (salvage), braided cord, plant fiber | Strength must exceed target fish weight |
| Sinkers | Lead, stone, or any dense weight | Gets bait to bottom |
| Floats/bobbers | Cork, wood, sealed bottle | Suspends bait at desired depth |
| Bait (natural) | Worms, insects, minnows, cut fish, bread | Match to target species |
| Lures (artificial) | Carved wood, feather, metal spinner | Mimic prey fish or insects |
Chapter 3: Fish Traps
| Trap Type | Construction | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Funnel trap (minnow trap) | Wire mesh or woven basket with funnel entrance | Small fish, baitfish |
| Basket trap (large) | Woven from willow, bamboo, or wire | Medium fish, catfish, eels |
| Weir (stream fence) | Stakes driven into streambed, woven panels | Migrating fish (salmon, shad) |
| Tidal trap | Stone walls in tidal zone | Coastal fish trapped at low tide |
| Crayfish trap | Wire mesh box with funnel | Crayfish, crawdads |
Funnel principle: Fish swim into the wide end of the funnel easily but cannot find the narrow exit. Bait inside attracts them. Check traps daily.
Chapter 4: Aquaculture (Fish Farming)
| Species | Difficulty | Growth Rate | Feed | Water Temp |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tilapia | Easy | Fast (6-9 months to harvest) | Omnivore (algae, pellets, scraps) | 75-85F |
| Catfish (channel) | Easy | Moderate (12-18 months) | Omnivore | 75-85F |
| Trout (rainbow) | Moderate | Moderate (12-18 months) | Carnivore (insects, pellets) | 50-65F (cold water) |
| Carp (common) | Very easy | Moderate | Omnivore (anything) | 60-85F |
| Largemouth bass | Moderate | Slow (18-24 months) | Carnivore (minnows, insects) | 65-80F |
| Perch (yellow) | Moderate | Moderate | Omnivore | 60-75F |
Chapter 5: Pond Construction
| Component | Specification | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Site | Clay soil or lined, near water source | Holds water |
| Size | Minimum 1/4 acre for food production | Larger = more stable |
| Depth | 4-8 feet (deeper end) with shallow shelf | Thermal layers, predator refuge |
| Water supply | Spring, stream diversion, well, or rainfall | Maintains level and oxygen |
| Overflow/spillway | Pipe or channel at desired water level | Prevents dam overtopping |
| Drain | Bottom drain pipe with valve | Allows complete draining for harvest/maintenance |
| Aeration | Windmill aerator, fountain, or paddle wheel | Maintains dissolved oxygen |
| Stocking rate | 1,000-3,000 fish per acre (tilapia/catfish) | Depends on feeding and aeration |
Chapter 6: Fish Preservation
| Method | Shelf Life | Equipment | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smoking (hot) | 1-2 weeks (refrigerated) or 1-3 months (cool/dry) | Smokehouse, hardwood | Fatty fish (salmon, trout, mackerel) |
| Smoking (cold) | 2-4 weeks (cool) or months (dry climate) | Cold smokehouse (below 90F) | Salmon, herring |
| Salt curing (dry) | Months to years | Salt (heavy coating) | Cod, herring, any lean fish |
| Salt brine | Weeks to months | Salt solution (80% saturation) | Any fish |
| Drying (air/sun) | Months (if kept dry) | Drying rack, sun and wind | Lean fish in dry climates |
| Pickling | Months | Vinegar + salt + spices | Herring, small fish |
| Canning (pressure) | Years | Pressure canner, jars | Any fish |
| Freezing | Months to year | Freezer (if available) | Any fish |
Reference Card
- Fish traps work 24/7 with no attention: check daily, rebait weekly
- Tilapia and catfish are the easiest fish to farm: fast-growing, tolerant, omnivorous
- Pond stocking rate: 1,000-3,000 fish per acre with supplemental feeding and aeration
- Minimum pond depth: 4 feet (prevents complete freeze in winter, provides thermal refuge)
- Smoking preserves fish 1-3 months; salt curing preserves for months to years
- Gill net mesh size determines fish size caught: 2" mesh for panfish, 4"+ for large fish
- Aquaponics combines fish farming with plant growing: fish waste fertilizes plants
- Always gut and clean fish immediately after catching for best quality and safety
