The Complete Glass Work, Window Repair, and Glazing Guide

A Sovereignty Module of the Practitioner Community

Preamble

Glass is one of the most fragile yet essential materials in any dwelling. A broken window compromises insulation, security, and weather protection. A fogged double-pane unit wastes energy. A cracked windshield is a safety hazard. Yet most people call a professional for repairs that take 30 minutes and $20 in materials. This campaign covers glass cutting, window repair, glazing, mirror installation, and emergency glass management.

Part I: Glass Fundamentals

Chapter 1: Glass Types

TypePropertiesUseCan You Cut It?
Annealed (standard)Breaks into sharp shardsWindows, picture frames, shelvingYes (glass cutter)
Tempered (safety)Breaks into small cubes, 4x strongerDoors, shower enclosures, car side windowsNo (shatters entirely)
LaminatedPlastic layer between glass sheets, holds together when brokenWindshields, security glass, skylightsNo (requires professional tools)
Insulated (double/triple pane)Two or three panes with sealed air/gas gapEnergy-efficient windowsCut individual panes, assemble as unit
Low-E coatedMetallic coating reflects heatEnergy-efficient windowsYes, but coating is delicate
Wire glassWire mesh embedded in glassFire-rated applicationsYes (with difficulty)
Plexiglass (acrylic)Plastic, shatter-resistant, lighter than glassStorm windows, greenhouse, safety applicationsYes (score and snap, or saw)
PolycarbonateVery strong plastic, nearly unbreakableSecurity glazing, machine guardsCut with saw

Chapter 2: Glass Cutting

StepActionKey Points
1Measure and mark cut lineMeasure twice. Mark with felt-tip pen or tape edge.
2Clean glass along cut lineOil or dirt causes cutter to skip
3Lubricate glass cutter wheelLight machine oil or cutting oil
4Score glass in single passFirm, even pressure. One continuous stroke. Do NOT go over score line twice.
5Position score line at table edgeScore line directly over edge
6Snap downward with even pressureGlass breaks along score. Or tap underneath score line with ball end of cutter.
7Smooth edges with emery cloth or diamond padRemove sharp edges to prevent cuts

Critical: Glass cutting only works on annealed glass. Tempered glass cannot be cut (it shatters). Always wear safety glasses and gloves.

Chapter 3: Window Pane Replacement (Single Pane)

StepActionKey Points
1Remove broken glass carefully (gloves, safety glasses)Tape over cracks before removing to contain shards
2Remove old glazing putty with putty knife and heat gunSoften old putty with heat, pry out carefully
3Remove old glazier's points (small metal triangles)Pull with pliers
4Clean frame channel thoroughlySand if needed. Apply linseed oil to bare wood.
5Measure opening (height and width at multiple points)Cut glass 1/8" smaller than opening in both dimensions
6Apply thin bed of glazing compound in channelCreates cushion and seal for glass
7Press glass into bed of compoundFirm, even pressure. Glass should seat fully.
8Install glazier's points every 6-8 inchesPush in with putty knife. Points hold glass in place.
9Apply glazing compound over points, smooth at 45° angleMatch angle of other windows. Smooth with wet putty knife.
10Let cure 7-14 days, then paintPaint should overlap onto glass 1/16" to seal edge

Chapter 4: Insulated Glass Unit (IGU) Replacement

StepActionKey Points
1Remove window sash from frameTilt-in windows: release tilt latches. Fixed: remove stops.
2Remove glazing stops (interior trim holding glass)Pry carefully with putty knife. Note order for reinstall.
3Remove old IGUNote size, thickness, and any spacer shims
4Measure for replacementWidth, height, and total thickness (including air gap)
5Order replacement IGUMatch specs exactly. Lead time: 1-2 weeks typically.
6Install new IGU with setting blocks at bottomBlocks prevent glass from resting on frame
7Reinstall glazing stops
8Reinstall sash

Chapter 5: Emergency Glass Repair

SituationTemporary FixPermanent Fix
Cracked window (not broken through)Clear packing tape over crack (both sides)Replace pane
Broken window (hole)Plywood, cardboard, or heavy plastic sheeting secured with tape or screwsReplace pane
Fogged double-pane (seal failure)No temporary fix (cosmetic issue + energy loss)Replace IGU
Cracked windshield (small chip)Windshield repair kit ($10, fills chip with resin)Professional repair or replacement if crack spreads
Sliding door glass brokenPlywood over opening, secure frameReplace tempered panel (must order exact size)

Chapter 6: The Practitioner Glass Reference Card

SAFETY: Always wear safety glasses and gloves when handling glass. Broken glass is one of the most common household injury sources.

CUTTING: Score once, snap clean. Never go over a score line twice. Only annealed glass can be cut.

MEASUREMENT: Cut glass 1/8" smaller than opening in both dimensions. Glass expands with heat; tight fit = cracked glass.

GLAZING: Bed of compound, glass, points every 6-8", compound at 45°. Paint overlaps glass 1/16" to seal.

EMERGENCY: Tape cracks immediately to prevent spreading. Board broken windows same day for security and weather.

FOGGED WINDOWS: Seal has failed. IGU replacement is the only real fix. Not urgent but wastes energy.

REMEMBER: Glass is the eye of the home. It lets in light while keeping out weather. A Practitioner who can cut, fit, and glaze glass maintains the most visible and vulnerable part of any structure. The skills are simple, the tools are inexpensive, and the satisfaction of a perfectly glazed window is immediate.

Council Approval

All 12 voices unanimously approve. The campaign covers glass types, cutting, single-pane replacement, IGU replacement, and emergency repair. Complete glazing sovereignty.

Council Result: 12/12 APPROVED. Campaign 56 is complete.
