Reference Card

  1. Written law: write it down. Post publicly. Everyone knows the rules. Unwritten law = arbitrary law = tyranny.
  2. Presumption of innocence: accused is innocent until proven guilty. Burden of proof on accuser. Prevents witch hunts.
  3. Proportional justice: punishment fits the crime. Theft = restitution + penalty. Murder = exile or death. Never torture.
  4. Separation of powers: those who make law should not judge cases. Those who judge should not enforce. Prevents tyranny.
  5. Property rights: what you build/grow/make is yours. Clear boundaries. Written records. Without property rights, no one invests.
  6. Regular meetings: monthly town meeting minimum. Everyone speaks. Transparency prevents corruption. Information = trust.
  7. Trade: surplus enables specialization. Specialization enables excellence. Market day weekly. Fair weights. No fraud.
  8. Alliances: no community survives alone long-term. Build relationships before crisis. Mutual defense. Shared resources. Trust.
