The Complete Hearing Protection, Ear Health, and Auditory Preservation Guide

A Sovereignty Module of the Practitioner Community

Preamble

Hearing loss is permanent and cumulative. Every exposure to loud noise above 85 decibels damages the delicate hair cells of the inner ear. These cells do not regenerate. A single gunshot without protection causes immediate, irreversible damage. Power tools, machinery, music, and industrial environments all pose risks. This campaign covers hearing protection, ear health maintenance, tinnitus management, and emergency ear care.

Part I: Understanding Sound and Damage

Chapter 1: Decibel Reference Chart

Sound SourceDecibels (dB)Safe Exposure Time
Whisper30 dBUnlimited
Normal conversation60 dBUnlimited
Vacuum cleaner70 dBUnlimited
City traffic80 dB8 hours
Lawn mower85 dB8 hours (damage begins here)
Power drill90 dB2 hours
Chainsaw100 dB15 minutes
Rock concert110 dB2 minutes
Gunshot (unsuppressed)140-170 dBInstant damage
Jet engine (100 ft)140 dBInstant damage

RULE: For every 3 dB increase above 85, safe exposure time is cut in half.

Chapter 2: Hearing Protection Options

ProtectionNRR (Noise Reduction Rating)CostBest For
Foam earplugs (disposable)25-33 dB$0.10-0.50/pairGeneral use, sleeping, power tools
Silicone earplugs (reusable)22-28 dB$5-20Repeated use, swimming, sleeping
Over-ear muffs20-30 dB$15-50Power tools, mowing, construction
Electronic muffs22-30 dB (amplify quiet sounds, block loud)$30-300Shooting, hunting, communication needed
Double protection (plugs + muffs)Combined NRR + 5 dBVariesShooting, extreme noise environments
Custom molded plugs25-35 dB$50-200Musicians, frequent shooters, industrial

Chapter 3: Ear Health Maintenance

PracticeFrequencyDetails
Keep ears dryAfter swimming/bathingTilt head, gently dry with towel. Swimmer's ear (otitis externa) from trapped moisture.
Do NOT insert objectsNeverNo cotton swabs inside ear canal. They push wax deeper and risk perforation.
Earwax is protectiveLeave it aloneEarwax traps dust, bacteria, insects. Ears are self-cleaning.
Earwax removal (if blocked)As neededSoften with mineral oil or hydrogen peroxide drops. Let gravity drain. Or use bulb syringe with warm water.
Hearing testEvery 2-5 years (annually if exposed to noise)Baseline test establishes your normal. Track changes over time.

Chapter 4: Emergency Ear Situations

SituationActionSeek Professional Care
Sudden hearing loss (one ear)This is a medical emergencyWithin 24-48 hours. Steroid treatment is time-sensitive.
Insect in earPut 2-3 drops of mineral oil or olive oil in ear. Insect drowns and floats out. Do NOT use tweezers. If insect does not come out
Foreign object in earDo NOT attempt removal with tools. Tilt head, shake gently. If object does not fall out
Ear infection (pain, fever, discharge)Warm compress on outer ear. Pain relief (ibuprofen). If fever above 101°F, severe pain, or discharge
Ruptured eardrumKeep ear dry. Do not put anything in ear. Most heal in 2-3 months. If hearing does not improve in 2-3 months
Tinnitus (ringing)Avoid silence (use white noise/fan). Reduce caffeine and salt. Protect from further noise exposure. If sudden onset, one-sided, or pulsatile (rhythmic)

Chapter 5: The Practitioner Hearing Reference Card

ALWAYS CARRY EARPLUGS: A pair of foam earplugs in your pocket or on your keychain costs $0.10 and prevents irreversible damage. No excuse.

DOUBLE UP FOR SHOOTING: Foam plugs PLUS over-ear muffs. A single gunshot without protection causes permanent hearing damage. Electronic muffs allow conversation while blocking gunshots.

TINNITUS WARNING: Ringing after noise exposure means damage occurred. If ringing persists more than 24 hours, damage is likely permanent. Protect what remains.

CHILDREN: Children's ears are more susceptible to noise damage. Protect them earlier and more aggressively than adults.

REMEMBER: Hearing is the sense that connects you to people (conversation), alerts you to danger (footsteps, vehicles, alarms), and orients you in darkness. Unlike vision, hearing works 360 degrees and through walls. A Practitioner who protects their hearing maintains situational awareness that cannot be replaced by any other sense or technology.
