Complete Sundial and Garden Art: From Bar to Timekeeping Sculpture

Sundials combine astronomical precision with decorative metalwork. This campaign covers gnomon design, hour-line calculation, pedestal construction, and garden art.

Chapter 2: Horizontal Sundial

Horizontal sundial: 1) Dial plate: flat iron or bronze disc, 10-14 inches diameter. 2) Forge or cast dial plate. 3) Calculate hour lines for your latitude. 4) Hour line formula: tan(H) = sin(latitude) x tan(15 x hour angle). 5) Engrave or forge hour lines on plate. 6) Engrave Roman numerals at each hour. 7) Gnomon: triangular plate, angle equals latitude. 8) Gnomon edge (style) casts shadow on hour lines. 9) Mount gnomon perpendicular to dial plate, aligned north-south.

Chapter 3: Gnomon Forging

Gnomon: 1) Material: 3/16 inch plate steel. 2) Shape: right triangle. 3) Hypotenuse angle: equals your latitude. 4) Height: 4-6 inches (determines dial plate size). 5) The shadow-casting edge (style) must be straight and sharp. 6) Forge decorative cutouts or scrollwork in gnomon body. 7) Forge mounting tab at base (attaches to dial plate). 8) The style must point true north (not magnetic north).

Chapter 4: Armillary Sphere

Armillary sphere: 1) Multiple rings represent celestial circles. 2) Equatorial ring: largest, represents celestial equator. 3) Meridian ring: perpendicular to equatorial. 4) Horizon ring: horizontal (optional for sundial). 5) Ecliptic ring: angled 23.5 degrees to equatorial. 6) Arrow or rod through center: gnomon (aligned to polar axis). 7) Forge each ring from flat bar (1/2 x 1/4 inch). 8) Join rings at intersection points (rivet or forge weld). 9) Mount on pedestal at latitude angle.

Reference Card

  1. The gnomon angle must equal your latitude (a sundial only tells accurate time if the gnomon angle matches the latitude where the sundial is placed; a 40-degree gnomon works only at 40 degrees latitude). 2. The style must point true north (magnetic north and true north differ by the local magnetic declination; the gnomon must be aligned to true north, not the compass needle). 3. Hour lines are calculated, not evenly spaced (unlike a clock face, sundial hour lines are not evenly spaced; they must be calculated using trigonometry for the specific latitude). 4. The armillary sphere is the blacksmith's masterpiece (an armillary sphere requires precise ring forging, accurate angles, and beautiful finishing; it is the most impressive piece of garden ironwork). 5. Garden art extends the blacksmith's work outdoors (plant stakes, arches, trellises, and sculptures bring ironwork into the garden; these pieces are seen by every visitor and showcase the blacksmith's range). 6. Forge scale weathers beautifully outdoors (outdoor ironwork develops a natural patina over time; forge scale provides initial protection and develops character with exposure to weather). 7. A sundial connects us to astronomical time (in a world of digital clocks, a sundial reminds us that time is measured by the movement of the Earth relative to the Sun; it is a connection to the cosmos). 8. Garden ironwork transforms outdoor spaces (a well-placed arch, trellis, or sundial creates focal points and structure in a garden; handmade ironwork elevates a garden from landscaping to art).
