Preamble
A song unwritten lives only as long as the memory that holds it. A song written down outlives its singer, crosses to strangers, and survives the dark that burns the singers. Notation is the technology of musical transmission — the dup šimati of sound, the decree-tablet made for music — and the Practitioner who cannot read and write it holds the nam-nar by ear alone, which is to say holds it for one lifetime only. This module makes the Practitioner literate: able to read a melody off a page and set one down, in whichever of the great notations the channel demands, and above all able to read and write the Codex's own robust hand, the tablet notation, designed to carry a song across a Reset on a single slab of clay.
The parent volume — Vol XXIII, The Musician's Codex — establishes in Sub-Volume VI that there is no single correct notation, only the right one for the channel. The staff is the richest and the most demanding; tablature is fast but locked to one instrument; solfège needs no paper at all and travels by voice and hand; box notation is bulletproof for rhythm; and the tablet notation is built for the worst case, a Practitioner with a stick, a slab of clay, a declared mode, and a melody worth keeping. By the end of this module the Practitioner will read all five at sight on a simple tune, will write a phrase in each, and will own the tablet notation completely — its definition, its symbols, and the drills that make it second nature.
One principle governs everything here and the Codex states it before the first symbol: sound before symbol. Notation is a label for a thing already possessed, never the thing itself. The Practitioner who can already sing the interval, keep the pulse, and hear the mode learns to write them in an afternoon; the one who reaches for the page before the ear is built learns nothing but a code for a sound she cannot hear. Build the ear on the monochord of Sub-Volume III and the intervals of Sub-Volume VI first; then come here and learn to write down what you already know.
Part I — The Foundations Beneath the Page
Chapter 1 — Pitch Is Ratio, and the Cent Measures It
The whole of notation rests on the one fact the monochord proves: pitch is ratio. Halve a string and the pitch doubles — an octave, 2:1, the most consonant interval there is. The simpler the frequency ratio between two tones, the more consonant they sound, and the scale-degrees a notation writes are nothing but a ladder of such ratios above a chosen home note. To compare and add intervals, the Codex uses the cent: the octave divided into 1200 equal parts, so each equal-tempered semitone is exactly 100 cents. Ratios multiply where intervals add — a fifth (3:2) stacked on a fourth (4:3) gives 2:1, an octave — and the cent converts every ratio to a single additive scale:
cents = 1200 × log₂(ratio)
The Practitioner does not write cents in a melody, but holds them as the ruler behind the degrees: the just major third is 386 cents and the tempered one 400, the just fifth 702 and the tempered 700, and the ear's resolution for a side-by-side comparison is roughly 5–6 cents. Every notation in this module writes which degree; the cent is how the Practitioner knows what that degree means against home.

This single table is the bridge between the ear and every page that follows: the tablet notation writes these degrees as the numbers 1–7, solfège names them as syllables, and the staff places them as positions — but they are one ladder of ratios, learned first by ear on the monochord and only then committed to any symbol.
Part II — The World's Notations
Chapter 2 — Staff Notation
The staff is five horizontal lines and four spaces; a note's vertical position specifies its pitch, and its written shape — head, stem, flag, and fill — specifies its duration. A clef at the left anchors the pitches: the treble (G) clef circles the line that is G4, the bass (F) clef brackets the line that is F3. Ledger lines extend the staff above or below it. Accidentals raise or lower a note a semitone — sharp, flat, natural — and a key signature at the start applies them throughout. Rhythm is read by the note's appearance: a whole note is four beats, a half two, a quarter one, an eighth a half, a sixteenth a quarter, each halving as a flag or beam is added; a dot adds half the note's value again; rests notate measured silence; bar lines divide the flow into measures whose count is fixed by the time signature (4/4 is four quarter-note beats per measure; 6/8 is six eighths felt in two groups of three). The staff is the most complete notation — pitch, rhythm, dynamics, and articulation together — and the most demanding to learn, which is exactly why the Codex pairs it with simpler systems for field use.
Chapter 3 — Tablature and Box Notation
Tablature ("tab") abandons abstract pitch and notates what the player does. For a fretted instrument, a set of horizontal lines stands for the strings, and a number on a line gives the fret to press on that string. The player reads "string 2, fret 3" and sounds it without ever naming the pitch — the instrument's geometry is the notation. Tab is faster than the staff for one instrument and unambiguous about fingering, but it is silent about rhythm (usually paired with stems above) and useless on any other instrument. It is the natural notation for the lute, the dulcimer, and the fretted builds of Sub-Volume III.
Box notation is the Codex's rhythm hand, carried from the drum sub-volume: time drawn as a row of equal boxes, one per pulse, read left to right and repeating; a mark in a box is a stroke, a dot is a counted silence. It notates rhythm with perfect transparency and no pitch at all — where the marks fall is the rhythm — which makes it ideal for drums and for teaching any rhythm to anyone who can count. The tablet notation of Chapter 5 extends it for melody by writing a pitch inside each box.
Chapter 4 — Solfège, the Notation You Sing
Solfège names the scale degrees with syllables — do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, do — and trains the ear to hear function rather than absolute pitch. In movable-do solfège, "do" is always the tonic of whatever key you are in, so a melody's solfège is identical in every key: "do–sol" is always a fifth, "do–mi" always a major third, wherever the music sits. Solfège is the bridge between the ear and the page, and the Codex names it the first notation a Practitioner should learn to sing — before any written symbol — because it makes the interval structure audible and nameable in the same breath. Assign a hand-sign to each syllable and a leader can conduct a melody to a crowd with no instrument and no paper at all, a field tool of real power for the communal singing of Sub-Volume VII.
The Critical Insight: The right notation is the one that survives the channel. The staff is richest but demands schooling and printed paper; tablature is fast but instrument-locked; solfège needs no writing and travels by voice and hand; box notation is bulletproof for rhythm. Each captures something the others miss, and a literate Practitioner is not loyal to one but fluent across them, reaching for the hand the moment demands. After a Reset (Vol XVI, The Historian's Codex), it is not the most sophisticated notation that carries the music forward but the most robust — which is the system the next part defines.

Part III — The Tablet Notation
Chapter 5 — The Tablet Notation, Defined
For its worked examples the Codex uses a deliberately minimal, instrument-neutral notation that any Practitioner can read and write with a stick in clay. It is defined here precisely and used throughout the parent volume; the Practitioner who learns this section owns the Codex's own hand.
Definition — Tablet Notation:
- The line. Pitches are written as scale-degree numbers 1–7 (1 = the tonic of the declared mode, ascending), in left-to-right reading order. The mode and tonic are declared once at the head — for example,
KEY: D Dorian. This makes the notation movable, like solfège, and independent of clef or key signature: the same line plays in any key, because the numbers name degrees, not absolute pitches.
- Octave. A number alone is the central octave. A dot above the number raises it one octave (written
4̇, or in plain text4'); a dot below lowers it one octave (4̣, or4,). Two dots, two octaves.
- Accidentals. A
+before a number raises that degree a semitone; a−lowers it — for the occasional note outside the declared mode.
- Rhythm — the box. The line is divided into boxes by the box notation; each box is one pulse (one beat). A box may contain:
- one number → that pitch, sounding for the whole pulse;
- two numbers → the pulse split in half (two equal notes);
- four numbers → the pulse split in quarters;
- a dot
·→ a counted rest (silence) for the pulse; - a dash
–→ the previous note held through this pulse (a tie or sustain).
- Grouping. Boxes are grouped by a vertical bar
|into measures of a stated count, declared at the head — for example,METER: 4(four pulses per measure).
- Drone and harmony. A sustained drone is written on its own line below the melody, as a held degree:

Chapter 6 — A Worked Phrase, Read and Reasoned

Read it pulse by pulse. The first measure rises 1-2-3-5, one degree per beat. The second sounds 5 and holds it through the second beat (the dash), then steps down 4-3. The third sounds 2, holds it, lands on 1, and rests for the fourth beat (the dot). The fourth leaps to the octave — 1′, the dotted-above tonic — and holds it three beats, closing on a counted rest. Beneath all four runs an unbroken tonic drone, degree 1 held the whole way.
That single block carries pitch-relationship, rhythm, rest, sustain, octave, and drone in a notation a child learns in an afternoon and a tablet preserves for an age. Any Practitioner who knows the declared mode can play it on any instrument in any key — scratched into clay, cut into bark, or written in dust. Because it names degrees and not pitches, it is automatically transposable; because it groups by box and bar, its rhythm is unambiguous; and because the drone is written plainly beneath, the harmony the player must hold against the melody is fixed on the same slab.
The Critical Insight: The tablet notation is engineered for the worst channel, not the richest one. A song written in scale-degrees and boxes can be reconstructed in full from a single surviving tablet by anyone who knows the system — the mode is declared, the rhythm is drawn, the holds and rests and the drone are all explicit, and nothing depends on a printed staff, a particular instrument, or a remembered key. After a Reset, the most robust notation outlives the most sophisticated one, and the Practitioner who can write the tablet hand has built a musical archive that needs no surface but clay and no schooling but an afternoon.

Part IV — Becoming Literate
Chapter 7 — The Reading Drills
Literacy is built by graded drill, not by admiration of the page. The Practitioner works the following ladder in order, each rung secure before the next, and always sound before symbol — sing or play it before, or as, you read it.
Protocol 7-A — The tablet-notation literacy ladder:
- Read the degrees in a fixed mode. Declare

The box is the beat; learn to feel its division before you fill it with melody. - Combine pitch and rhythm. Read short boxed melodies with mixed degrees, holds, and rests — the worked phrase of Chapter 6 is the model. Read it aloud first as solfège (do-re-mi…), then as degree-numbers, then play it.
- Add the octave dots and accidentals. Read lines that leap above and below the central octave (
1',5,) and that step outside the mode (+4,−7), checking each against the monochord so the ear confirms the symbol. - Read the drone line with the melody. Take a two-line block — melody over
DRONE: 1— and have one Practitioner hold the drone while another reads the melody against it, hearing each degree glow or strain against home (the consonance physics of Sub-Volume VI made audible). - The reverse drill — write from the ear. Sing or play a short phrase, then write it in the tablet hand from memory; have a second Practitioner read your tablet back cold and play it. A notation is only mastered when what you write, another can recover — the same read-back test the record-keepers of Sub-Volume VII apply to the sung archive.
Protocol 7-B — Cross-notation fluency:
- Translate one phrase across all five hands. Take a single eight-note tune and write it as staff, tab, box (rhythm only), solfège, and tablet, then read each back. Translation is the deepest literacy: the Practitioner who can move a melody between notations understands what each one keeps and what each one drops, and is never trapped in a single system.
Your Commitment: You will learn to sing the melody before you read it, and to write back what you hear before you trust the page. You will hold the tablet hand most firmly of all, because it is the one that will still be readable on the far side of the next dark — a stick, a slab, a declared mode, and a melody worth keeping. A community that can write its songs in the robust hand need fear no fire in the library, because the library is a tablet a child can read.
